Bathroom Upgrade Options: Wet Area, Facelift, or Full Remodel?

When your bathroom feels outdated, worn out, or just doesn’t work for your family anymore, it’s natural to wonder: Do I need to take on a complete remodel, or is there a simpler way to upgrade?

The reality is, bathroom remodeling isn’t one-size-fits-all. Depending on your goals, you can choose from a full gut remodel (best if you need major layout or plumbing changes), a bath facelift (ideal for a fresh look and better function), or a shower or bathtub area only remodel (the quickest, most efficient update).

At Joyce, we understand that every homeowner faces a lot of decisions when it comes to bath remodeling, from style and functionality to budget and timing. That’s why we’re here to help guide you through the entire process. Our team listens carefully to your needs, explains your options clearly, and works with you to create a solution that makes the most sense for your home and your family.

Outdated Bath Remodel

Bath Renovation 101: Why the Wet Area Always Comes First

In every bathroom, the wet area, your tub or shower, is the true focal point. It’s where you begin and end your day, making it the most frequently used and most functional part of the space. Because it combines plumbing, waterproofing, and daily wear, it’s also the area most prone to issues like leaks, mold, and outdated fixtures. Southern Living recommends that the first step in bathroom remodeling is making decisions about the wet area. This is where the shower and tub are, and they can be the most labor-intensive part of the process.

From a design standpoint, the wet area sets the tone for the entire bathroom. A sleek walk-in shower or a sparkling new tub instantly elevates the look and feel of the room, even if nothing else changes right away. From a practical perspective, updating this space improves safety with features like low thresholds, slip-resistant bases, and secure grab bars.

That’s why every remodel, whether it’s a quick shower or tub upgrade or a broader bath facelift, begins here. By transforming the tub or shower first, you create immediate comfort, style, and peace of mind. And if you choose to phase in additional updates later, you’ll already have the most important (and impactful) piece complete. After all, the wet area is usually about 80 percent of the cost of doing everything.

Updated Remodeled Bathroom

Shower or Bathtub Only Remodel (Typically $9,000 - $15,000)

For many homeowners, the shower or tub area is where function and style matter most, and it’s where remodels often begin. A wet-area upgrade focuses solely on replacing the shower or bath, providing the most significant visual and functional improvement in the shortest time.

This level typically includes the removal of the old tub or shower, installation of a new shower or tub system, wall surrounds, plumbing fixture upgrades (such as a new showerhead or faucet), and accessories like grab bars or shelving. It does not usually include new flooring, vanities, lighting, or changes to plumbing location. Because the focus is on the wet area, it’s efficient, budget-friendly, and often completed in just days, not weeks.

Bath Total Facelift (Typically $12,000 - $20,000)

A bath facelift is ideal if your bathroom layout works but the finishes are outdated. This level usually includes a new shower or bath, updated flooring, fresh wall finishes, and replacement of key fixtures such as the vanity, countertop, sink, faucet, toilet, and lighting.

It’s a smart middle ground: you get a fresh, functional space without the expense of altering plumbing locations or tearing down walls. Cosmetic changes, such as painting, new mirrors, and hardware, are sometimes included in this package but could also easily be completed by the homeowner. What it does not typically cover is major structural work, moving walls, rerouting pipes, or complete electrical rewiring. The layout stays the same, but the look and comfort improve dramatically.

Complete Bathroom Remodel (Typically $30,000 - $60,000+)

A full gut remodel is the most extensive option. This is the right choice if you need to move plumbing, reconfigure walls, or completely change your layout. It allows for maximum customization and can create a spa-like retreat tailored exactly to your needs.

This level typically includes demolition down to the studs, new plumbing and electrical systems, custom shower or tub installations, new flooring, custom cabinetry, countertops, lighting, ventilation, and any layout changes you desire. It also allows for structural adjustments such as enlarging the bathroom or reconfiguring adjoining rooms. Because it’s a complete overhaul, it requires the most significant investment of time and budget. What it does not usually include are purely decorative extras like luxury furniture, artwork, or décor—those are chosen separately once the remodel is complete. The result, however, is a one-of-a-kind bathroom transformation built to last.
